Station Instruments

Visitors sometimes ask what equipment the Station uses. Here is the complete list. Nothing has been left out. There isn't anything else.

The Rock

Material
granite, grey, with one white vein
Weight
1.1 kg (weighed on the kitchen scale, 1994, with permission)
Found
at the side of the road on the way back from my brother's
Service
continuous since 1994, except one day in 2002 (Kevin)
Maintenance
none required. The rock maintains itself.

The String

Current
String No. 5, garden twine, installed 2019
Previous
No. 1 (rotted, 1998), No. 2 (replaced after the 2002 incident, on principle), No. 3 (a bird took it for a nest, 2009 — allowed), No. 4 (frayed, 2019)
Notes
The string is the most important part of the station after the rock. Without the string, "swinging" can't be measured, and a rock on the ground is just a rock.

The Post, the Chair, the Notebook

The post
part of the fence. It was there first.
The chair
a folding chair kept by the back door, for observations of longer than a minute
The notebook
No. 14. The first thirteen are in a box under the stairs. I am told they should be "digitised." This page is as digitised as they're going to get.
Calibration
Every New Year's Day I go out and look at the rock and say what it's doing out loud. It has always been doing what I said.
